Windward Islands Sailing Trip - 2008

On April 28th, 2008, the Good Ship Chances, a Moorings bareboat charter, sailed from Marigot Bay in St. Lucia, the Windward Islands. Aboard was an intrepid "pirate" crew of five: Gary, Rick, Mark, and two Bruces. The plan included sailing to:

With stops both outbound and return at Bequia and the Pitons, returning to the Moorings base at Marigot Bay on May 5th.

The route of sail and specifications of the boat itself are shown in the diagrams below. Following the diagrams are selected photographs from the many I took on the trip. Enjoy!

The Piton from the South with other moored boats.

[p4280028.jpg]

Land of beautiful sunsets. PC wallpaper for sure!

[p4290029.jpg]

Leaving the Pitons behind, headed South. Our long run (50nm.)

[p4280022.jpg]

A passing cruse ship in the distance.

[p4280026.jpg]

Cruse ship in the sunset. Just for visual effect.

[p4290033.jpg]

Bequia (Bek-way), a smaller and very pretty island.

[p4300035.jpg]

A commercial harbor. The inter-island ferrys are everywhere.

[p4300036.jpg]

Ashore are parks and trees and shops and... INTERNET CAFEs!

[p4300038.jpg]

More PC wallpaper thanks to the T-shirt shop.

[p4300040.jpg]

Maybe the guy who owns the T-shirt shop owns this, too!

[p5020004.jpg]

Our neighbours for a night. You could hear the dogs and chickens.

[p5020007.jpg]

Darn, another perfect sunset. Bequia harbor.

[p5030010.jpg]

Heading out. You have to sail around the bump in the far distance.

[p4300042.jpg]

Leaving Bequia, there are some interesting ruins along the coast.

[p4300043.jpg]

This is the approach to Canouan, only a short hop South.

[p4300044.jpg]

It is a small island, but does have a Moorings base.

[p4300045.jpg]

We could snorkel right off the boat. That's Gary in the water.

[p4300048.jpg]

They have sunsets there, too. Passing boat for accent.

[p4300050.jpg]

Here's the galley, with Gary and Rick prepping some food.

[p4300051.jpg]

A view of the dining table and one of the forward cabins. Can you believe this boat had five (5) heads?

[p4300052.jpg]

As you can see, the cockpit had a nice dining area also.

[p5010059.jpg]

Our goal: the Tobago Cays. Look at the color of that water!

[p5010060.jpg]

This neat schooner brings tourists on a day trip.

[p5010063.jpg]

The ancorage from the top of one of the cays. Union Island in the distance.

[p5010064.jpg]

A closer view. Our boat is just right of center.

[p5010069.jpg]

These cactuses grow like trees, 15 feet tall.

[p5010070.jpg]

The view north to Canouan. Name that plant!

[p5010071.jpg]

Seabirds are common, begging for food.

[004_1a.jpg]

Diver Rick looking for the fishes.

[006_3a.jpg]

Brain coral, probably damaged by a hurricane.

[007_4a.jpg]

Underwater trees. Note white fish in foreground.

[009_6a.jpg]

Looks like Bambi's antlers fell off...

[011_8a.jpg]

Gary...Floating. Note water clarity.

[012_9a.jpg]

Wish I knew the names of all these fishes.

[014_11a.jpg]

Somehow I just have to photograph these wavy things.

[016_13a.jpg]

Blue fish come in schools. Who's the teacher?

[017_14a.jpg]

A mountain of coral. The view is amazing.

[022_19a.jpg]

Gary's flippers. Must be something interesting over there.

[023_20a.jpg]

Bruce the Navigator. Who else would wear maroon shorts?

[024_21a.jpg]

Little orange volcanos. Not good to touch, I think.

[026_23a.jpg]

A long skinny fish. Blends well with the rocks.

[028_25a.jpg]

These guys have a ready-made place to hide.

[p5020001.jpg]

Intrepid explorers returning from a snorkeling expedition.

[p5010073.jpg]

Palm occluding the sun. Washed out all the color.

[p5030011.jpg]

A ferry inbound to Bequia. It's a surprisingly busy place.

[p5030012.jpg]

Our Northbound view of St. Vincent.

[p5030017.jpg]

Kingstown, the major commercial port on St. Vincent.

[p5040028.jpg]

Wallilabou Harbor, St. Vincent. Note the building to the right.

[p5030019.jpg]

Remember "Pirates of the Caribbean?" Filmed here.

[p5030020.jpg]

That kid bummed a bottle of sprite, inspiring a limerick. The boats to the right are from Norway, passing through.

[p5030026.jpg]

Darn, now a perfect Wallilabou sunset.

[p5040033.jpg]

Headed home, with Bruce at the controls.

[p5040038.jpg]

Can't get enough pictures of the pitons, they are impressive.

[p5040039.jpg]

Soufriere, the town just North of the pitons.

[p5040041.jpg]

If they name a beer after the Pitons, can it be bad?

[p5050044.jpg]

They have coconut and banana plantations in the strangest places.

[p5050055.jpg]

The bananas are bagged even before they finish growing.

[p5050048.jpg]

Never know who you will pass going in the other direction.

[p5050051.jpg]

The Moorings base at Marigot Bay on St. Lucia. Almost home!

Until Next Time !!!
